Tight 2-Wheel Champs moves to scary East London circuit

South Africa’s two most prestigious motorcycling title chases of 2010 will continue at the country’s fastest race circuit next Saturday (October 30). The occasions will be rounds 13 and 14 of this year’s Interfile SA Motorcycle Racing Championship at the East London Grand Prix circuit.

The two-wheeler competition should provide many highlights at the penultimate round of this year’s WesBank Super Series.

The East London circuit is only for the brave – last year, the top Superbike riders were clocked at speeds of over 280 km/h through the venue’s Rifle Range sweep. That apart, the circuit boasts a tight and twisty infield, making the setup of engines, suspensions and chassis a serious challenge for riders and technicians.

Going to East London, the Interfile Superbike category will see the continuation of an intrigueing title fight at the head of the pack. Lance Isaacs (Bikefin Honda) tops the championship log, with five victories behind his name.

Second, also with a total of five victories, is Greg Gildenhuys (Autohaus Towing BMW), but Gildenhuys has won the most recent four races in a row. That must make him the logical victory favourite at the East London circuit.

Third, and the only other competitor left in the title chase, is defending SA champion Sheridan Morais, on his Emtek Racing Aprilia.

With top speed not the Aprilia’s strongest suit, Morais could battle to challenge for race victories around the ultra-fast East London venue. Other riders could take on the leading trio, led by Bikefin Honda’s Dane Hellyer and Chris Leeson, Nicholas Grobler (Jonway BMW) and Julian Odendaal (MS Air Suzuki).

Meanwhile Heinrich Rheeder (Pta North Yamaha), Mark Edwards (Icarus Security Yamaha) and Simon Bezuidenhout (Kawasaki) will head up the Masters category for riders over the age of 35 years.

Great Odds

* With a total of six victories to his name so far this year, Ronan Quarmby (Interfile Yamaha) will head up the Interfile Supersport title chase in East London. His only two title challengers will be Stephen Odendaal (MS Air Suzuki) and Robert Portman (Emtek Racing Triumph), with any of the three riders capable of winning at East London.

Other riders expected to join a demented, slip-streaming pack should include Brent Harran (Bikefin Honda), Dean Vos (VTR Metals Kawasaki), Dylan White (JW Aluminium Yamaha), Bjorn Estment (NFB Financial Yamaha), David McFadden (Race Prep Honda) and James Egan (Thundersport Yamaha).

Both the Interfile Superbike and Interfile supersport riders will tackle two 10-lap races next Saturday, with the official qualifying session on Saturday morning.
